STARTING AN ART COLLECTION:
Many questions arise at the thought of starting an art collection. What kind of work, or which artists appeal to me? Where do I find these artists? Why does one artist’s work cost more than another artist’s? Will the work keep its value?
These are just some of the questions our knowledgeable staff at Rob Schouten Gallery will be glad to answer for you, and assist you in making choices that will let you enjoy the pieces in your collection for years to come.
IN GENERAL:
Buy the art you just love!
Your art collection will enhance your home for many years and has the potential for enhancing your quality of life on a daily basis. Acquiring the art you love feels good.
Learn about individual artists and art, instead of trends.
An informed decision will help you avoid buying work from less than serious artists or pieces that soon will feel silly and dated. It will also help you spot artists at an early stage in their career before prices rise.
Do it your way!
Find the style of collecting that best suits you. Whether you purchase a select work once a year or two, bundle your purchases for an entire room, floor or house, or commission your favorite artists to create a work with personal meaning, there is no ”correct way” to collect art.
Ask lots of questions.
Never hesitate to ask your gallery or dealer whatever questions you may have about a work of art or artist. Archival quality, provenance, history, condition and artist information all contribute to the value and enjoyment of your art.
CORPORATE COLLECTIONS:
Get Advice.
Work with a reputable art consultant or gallery to identify where to install art, what
kind of art, and what style most expresses your company’s overall image and purpose. Keep in mind that the art you display sends a direct message to clients and visitors.
Buy Local.
Building your company’s collection from local artists reflects loyalty and appreciation and often leads to positive publicity in the media. It shows clients, employees and your community you care!
Keep Track.
Catalogue when, where, through whom and for how much you purchased your art. Careful record keeping of the artworks you purchase can prevent future confusion regarding insurance, damage, loss or value.
Our experienced and knowledgeable staff can assist you!
