Cathedral is a painting about healing on a cellular level. We see a white rose suspended in a cavernous labyrinthine space of organic tissue. The brightly lit rose represents paradise and the seat of the Trinity in Dante's Paradiso. In alchemy the White Queen from whom the Red King (wisdom) emerges is symbolized as a white rose.
Here the healing light radiating off the rose illuminates dark cellular matter, infusing it with spirit and returning it to vitality. (the reddish golden color)
This was the first painting I completed in 2006 after a nearly eight month painting hiatus due to my mother's stroke and my wife's hip surgery. I felt I needed to paint an image about emerging from a dark dream into the light of creativity.
