CARY LOOPUYT JURRIAANS - painter

Classical realist painter Cary Loopuyt Jurriaans grew up in The Netherlands and studied at the Florence Academy of Art before moving to the United States and pursuing her career in art. Painting still lifes has been invaluable to me, offering the chance to capture the transient beauty of fleeting life and everyday things of beauty.

Jurriaans states: “I love working from life, especially with flowers and food, as their beauty fades quickly. (nowadays technology will help but it is not the same). I love  to make decisive choices while the subject still looks fresh, enhancing my ability to respond instinctively and creatively in the moment. Painting the Still Life  has helped me to refine my skills and explore new techniques and I love painting the beauty of simple things.”

Paintings on copper

Artists have painted on copper for centuries because of its unique characteristics. Being metal, it’s inorganic and impervious to moisture, so it’s not subject to the same stresses that can cause other supports to deteriorate over time.  Copper forms a chemical bond to the oil paint and the color maintains its luster.

The panel is also a beautiful color that sometimes can be glimpsed through some of the thinner passages of a painting, and lends artwork a sparkling, gem-like quality, copper has been used as a substrate for oil paintings for hundreds of years. The first oils on copper date back to the early sixteenth century, with surviving works from as early as the 1560s.
