FRANCES WOOD - watercolor painter

On any given day on Whidbey there’s a good chance you’ll see a variety of birds, with more than 200 species identified on the island throughout the year. Artist and avian writer Frances Wood takes note of their ample grace and variety of personalities.

Wood’s work shows her love for birds, with her delicate and accurate watercolors. In addition to her paintings, Wood has written “Brushed by Feathers: A Year of Birdwatching in the West,” which she also illustrated. She is also a former script writer for NPR’s “BirdNote,” and wrote a birding column for the South Whidbey Record, one of the island’s local newspaper.

New Watercolor Originals Mounted on Birch Panel

Limited edition giclée prints

“Feather light, glowing with color, often in constant movement, the essence of birds is hard to pin down, let alone depict in paint and paper,” Wood writes.  “Using watercolor and ink and allowing the white of the paper to be part of the image, I’ve attempted to show the lightness and flightiness of these ethereal creatures.”

All bird portraits are available as giclée prints in a limited edition of ten.
Many of the original watercolor and ink paintings are also available.

Author and artist Frances Wood loves to explore views through the branches of her Whidbey Island garden and environment. Using watercolor, allowing the white of the paper to be part of the image, Frances’ work explores the light and movement of plant life around her.

Wood explains: “As I relax and look out the window, I notice so much. Such as branches; some with leaves, some winter naked, doing all sorts of crazy things, crossing, overlapping, bending, swaying and creating windows to the sky or the horizon beyond.

Occasionally birds land, some disappearing into the foliage. Time spent in this quiet meditation has reopened my eyes to the infinite patterns, colors, textures and views just outside my windows or floating around in my memories. All awaiting and available for new interpretations with my watercolors, brush and paper.”
